iRumorMill.com Determination: Real
According to a September 17, 2014 article by The Hill, The Air Force made the phrase “so help me God” optional in its oath for a re-enlisting "atheist airman who protested the language."
Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James released a statement saying, “We take any instance in which Airmen report concerns regarding religious freedom seriously.” The Secretary added, “We are making the appropriate adjustments to ensure our Airmen's rights are protected.”
The iRumorMill.com crew found a copy of the original oath posted on the Militaryspot.com website:
I, _____, do solemnly swear
(or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States
against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and
allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the
United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to
regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.
