iRumorMill.com Determination: Real
The reports are real, according to a Jan. 26, 2016 article by Fox News. The article said, "Character actor Abe Vigoda, whose leathery, sunken-eyed face made him ideal for playing the over-the-hill detective Phil Fish in the 1970s TV series 'Barney Miller' and the doomed Mafia soldier in 'The Godfather,' died Tuesday at age 94."
Part of an ongoing joke on the Barney Miller show was the age of Vigoda's Detective Fish. In 1982, People Magazine accidently released a false report of his death. About 5 years later, WWOR - Channel 9 news in Secaucus, New Jersey, made a similar mistake when a reporter referred to him as "the late Abe Vigoda."
False reports of his death became a
running gag for several years. In 1988 Vigoda appeared on the
David
Letterman show to prove that he was still alive.
