San Francisco 49er quarterback Colin Kaepernick sat through the singing of the national anthem at the start of a preseason game against Green Bay at Levi's Stadium on Friday Aug 26, 2016. He claims his decision came in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

"San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has willingly immersed himself into controversy by refusing to stand for the playing of the national anthem in protest of what he deems are wrongdoings against African Americans and minorities in the United States." This according to an Aug. 27, 2016 article by the NFL.

This is not the first time he refused to stand and salute the national ensign at the start of a preseason game. Keapernick told reporters, "I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."

This drew much national attention over the weekend. Fans posted video of themselves burning the quarterback's jersey.
