Maine Police Paid Hackers to Unlock Computer
System
A police department in Maine paid a ransom to
cyber criminals to unlock their infected computers.

According to an April 10, 2015
article by the Portland Press Herald, a $300 ransom was paid to hacker
by Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and four towns to release their shared
computers after they were infected with a “megacode” type virus that locked them
up.
The article said the "creator of
the virus gave the sheriff’s office a code to unlock the computer system after
the money was received." The ransom was paid out using bitcoins. A failed
attempt was made to apprehend the hackers by the FBI, who tracked the online
payment a bank account in Switzerland.
The iRumorMill.com released a
